Demons from Above

It was close to noon and the sky was dark as night. I was 5 miles away from the city but I could hear their emergency alarms clearly.

I took the terminal with me and climbed to the rooftop of my house. From there I could see the outline of the city. I connected the terminal and turned up the volume. A strong woman’s voice came out from the video feed. Her voice sounded familiar.

The city seemed as quiet and static as it always had. I knew, though, that the streets were full of people in panic. Up high above, against the blackness of the sky, strange points of light illuminated the top of the buildings with impressive intensity.

Some of the lights descended towards the city leaving a trail of red behind. It looked as if shooting stars were falling on Earth. The house shook with the rumble of the explosions. The guts of the city burst up in flames, illuminating the alien spaceship above.

As I watched I could hear the voice on the video feed speaking: “In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but we see only demons of epic proportions.”
